Tips to improve your listening - by Vera Nonaka

For me, one of the hardest things about English is speaking.  Of course, when I practise speaking, I can also practise listening in conversations.  Some of these tips are for conversations, and some are for studying on your own.
  • Practice: this means speak, talk and chat.
  • Listen to the lyrics, news, dialogues and narratives in TV and radio.
  • It is useful read the subtitles in English, to recognize and memorize the words, finding out their meaning in the dictionary when necessary.
  • Listen to audio-books at same time reading the books, also using the dictionary.  The quality of the speaker’s interpretation is essential to give you pleasure in listening the audiobooks.
  • If you are a beginner reader, start with an audiobook from the graded Readers collection – I recommend the classics – it is easier to like them, even in condensed versions. Take a book adequate for your level, this is important to encourage your work.
So what do you think?  Please add your own comments, suggestions and links on the blog below.

Watching a movie or general TV programs, listening to music, of course in English, and speaking with native speakers will help you as well. Here are some useful websites:
www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer
www.lyricstraining.com
www.ted.com
www.elllo.org
And of course you can practise on the Kaplan website.

There are many things that you can do in order to improve your English such as have a nice conversation with your host family, or maybe, if you live on a residence, with native speakers. This will help you to improve faster and also to meet new people and enjoy your stay in Manchester.

It`s very common in my country to pass through a public contest in order to get a job in the public organisations.
For example, if you want to apply for a job in the Police, you`ll have to achieve all the requirements, then you`ll have to succeed in a contest with other people doing a written test about Criminology, accountant, Constitutional law, Criminal Law, IT etc. The best scores are selected to proceed on the next steps of the contest.
As a consequence, an entire industry has been developed during the last 10 years in order to supply the candidates with all knowledge required. Nowadays, you have several kinds of academies where you can get prepared for the contests.
So if you want one of these jobs, you should look for a school which can provide you the best education. Take some of the points below in consideration.
Firstly, consider if you want a virtual school or a physical school. If you live far from the venue you`ll spend lots of precious time commuting.
Secondly, consider if you need a content class(those with explanation of all the subject), or a revision class(those with brief explanation about the subject, focused on the content used past contests), or even an exercise class(where you will revise all the subject solving the past tests and simulated tests).
Anyway, the most important advice I can give you is to never give up. You shouldn`t study TO succeed but UNTIL you succeed. Organise a timetable and follow it, don`t make excuses.
Some of the successful people that I know saved money for a while than stopped working in order to dedicate full time to their studies.
