Tips to improve your listening - by Vera Nonaka

For me, one of the hardest things about English is speaking.  Of course, when I practise speaking, I can also practise listening in conversations.  Some of these tips are for conversations, and some are for studying on your own.
  • Practice: this means speak, talk and chat.
  • Listen to the lyrics, news, dialogues and narratives in TV and radio.
  • It is useful read the subtitles in English, to recognize and memorize the words, finding out their meaning in the dictionary when necessary.
  • Listen to audio-books at same time reading the books, also using the dictionary.  The quality of the speaker’s interpretation is essential to give you pleasure in listening the audiobooks.
  • If you are a beginner reader, start with an audiobook from the graded Readers collection – I recommend the classics – it is easier to like them, even in condensed versions. Take a book adequate for your level, this is important to encourage your work.
