The contrast between the past and the present of production in industry
A Ford production line - an integral part of the Fordism model
Fordism is a term that describes the production line technique invented by Henry Ford in 1908 when he was thinking about how to manufacture the first car. Fordism was the principal way of production until Toyotism. Toyotism appeared as a response to the critical situation that the world was suffering because of the petrol crisis in 1973 and its goal was to correct all the shortcomings of Fordism. The gap between Fordism and Toyotism lies in the situation of the World in each specific time. Both ways of production has principal pillars that the enterprise has to follow independently of the different situations that can be suffering.
Features of Fordism:
- Increase the division of work.
- Intensive control in the time that the worker employ doing his chore (Time/Execution).
- Reduction in the cost of the product and increase in his circulation.
- Interest in the “Increase in the purchasing power of the salaried”.
- Agreements between the Workers-Union and “Capitalism” (The fat cats).
- Production line.

Features of Toyotism:
- Produce only the things that are already sold based on the demand.
- The five Zeros.
- 0 Mistakes.
- 0 Damages.
- 0 Delays.
- 0 Bureaucracy and paperwork.
- 0 Stock products.
- Reduce manufacturing with fewer employees.
- Workers who are able to do many different tasks.
- Produce the bare minimum.
- Autorotation that can stop faulty machines.
As you can see it’s not such a big difference between one and the other but there is a big gap when we talk about the period in witch they where created. Fordism is all about have more and sells more, manufacturing as quickly as you can and stock the capital. Toyotism is all about producing the strictly necessary, working hard and quickly avoiding all the things that can delay the process of manufacturing.
