Advertisements - a good or bad thing?
In modern days it is almost impossible to walk on the street, be on a bus or even live without hearing or seeing an advert on TV radio or other kind of communication device. The truth is that they are everywhere and we can't get away from them. But the question is, are advertisements a good thing? In reality, like everything, it has pros and cons. On one side, adverts are by far, one of the greatest incomes of a country because they give an enormous contribution to the Economy of a country. Thanks to them, many companies and enterprises grow in higher levels, not only on the amount of money earned by them, but also in popularity and recognition. Also, ads give the chance to many people to have a job, be inventive and spread their ideas and products. Many companies, like Coca-Cola, McDonalds, cars brands and so on have also the power to modify people's thoughts, change and affect cultures in a very subtle way by simply adding a catchy song, a sports superstar, futuristic designs or a funny line. Take Coca-Cola for example, credited for inventing the widely known image of Santa Claus in a red-and-white suit.
However, advertising can also have a dramatic effect on people's life. They can persuade and manipulate people on the point of making them lose control over their lives, specially their money. That's the reason why many adverts focus on catching children's attention rather than adults', because a child don't have the capability to distinguish what's good or bad, what's healthy or not; what's reliable and untrustworthy. In the same way, they are also related with many problems faced by the modern society with obesity, smoking and alcohol addiction among them. Despite increasing and manipulating people's needs and wants, it is very easy and unfair to put the blame on them. It's up to everyone to have the control over their lives and decide what's better or not for them and to decide if they should change channel or not.
