Lidice
A review of this harrowing Czech film, based on true events in World War 2
|
You might have not heard about this film, which was made last year, but maybe you’ve heard about the village, Lidice, which was destroyed during the Second World War. This film is based on real facts, which are deeply engraved in Czech history. People around the world started giving the name Lidice to their daughters, because the story is so emotional.
The story is about maybe the biggest mistake, which the German Empire made in the Second World War. One day, a group of brave men assassinated the second man in the German Empire – Reinhard Heydrich. The Empire started to investigate who had done it and one day, according to one ordinary love letter, made a decision that the assassination was carried out by somebody from Lidice. They killed all men from Lidice and women and children were sent to concentration camps. Some of the children were sent to new German families but it depended on strict rules of colour of their eyes and hair. Lidice was burnt, levelled to the ground and deleted from every map. The emotional side of this film is done by a main character, who was played by Karel Roden. He was in prison during the destruction of his village and when he came back, nobody was waiting for him there. There was nothing, just fields. In my opinion, this film is one of the most emotional films, which I have ever seen. Making these films is important for ordinary people, who want to see more from history and also for education, because watching these films is much more interesting than just listening to a teacher and it can help you to imagine the situations in a history.
